Ankara
Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city after Istanbul. Ankara has a population over 4 million people. It was formerly known as Angora. The Hittites gave it the name Ankuwash before 1200 BC, the Galatians and Romans called it Ancyra, and in the classical, Hellenistic, and Byzantine periods it was known as Ánkyra. Ankara is an important commercial and industrial city. It is the center of the Turkish Government, and houses all foreign embassies. The city was famous for its long-haired Angora goat and its prized wool (mohair), a unique breed of cat (Angora cat), white rabbits and their prized wool (Angora wool), pears, honey, and the region's muscat grapes.

Citadel (Hisar), Ankara, Turkey

The major concentration of historic sights is on or around the ancient hill topped by Ankara's ancient Citadel (hisar or kale). Here, beside the citadel, is the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, a historic caravanserai holding artifacts from 7500 years, especially from the Hittite era.

Directly across from the main entrance to the Citadel is the Çengel Han Rahmi M Koç Museum. Located in a former caravanserai built in 1522, its displays include Engineering, Road Transport, Scientific Instruments, Maritime, Everyday Life, and others. There's a museum shop and two places for meals: the Divan Café (with a delightful outdoor terrace), or the sophisticated Divan Brasserie in the courtyard.
Downhill toward Samanpazarı is the Seljuk Turkish Ahi Serafettin Mosque & Tomb (1290) which, unfortunately, is usually open only at prayer times, and this difficult to visit.
At the foot of the citadel hill near Ulus Square are the remains of Roman Ankara, including the ruined Temple of Augustus and Rome and the Column of Julian.
Across the city, on another hilltop, you must visit the Anıtkabir, the impressive Mausoleum of Kemal Atatürk.
Paris
(nicknamed the City of light) is the capital city of France, and the largest city in the country. 2.15 million people live in the center. If suburbs are counted, the population of Paris rises to 12 million people. The Seine river runs through the old part of Paris, and divides it into two parts, known as the Left Bank and the Right Bank.
Paris is surrounded by many forests.
Paris is also the centre of French economy, politics, traffic and culture. Paris has many art museums and historical buildings. As a traffic centre, Paris has a very good underground system, airports and stations. The "Metro" (underground) was built in 1900, and its total length is more than 200 km.
The city has a multi-cultural style, because 20% of the people there are from outside France. There are many different restaurants with all kinds of food.
Here are six very famous places to see in Paris:
  • The Eiffel Tower is the most famous sight in Paris, built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889 with 6,300 tons of iron. Over 6 million people visit it every year. There are three levels that you can visit, and the highest one is 276m above the ground
  • The Louvre is a museum with very famous, old works of art, such as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Originally, the building was built as a Palace for French kings. The Louvre is the third biggest museum in the world.
  • The Musée D'Orsay was a train station, but it is now an art museum. Most of the art at the Musée D'Orsay was made between 1848 and 1915. This is newer than the art at the Louvre.
  • The Moulin Rouge is a cabaret with many shows, and it opened in 1889. It is in Montmartre — a part of Paris with an exciting nightlife. In the Moulin Rouge, girls put on a famous dance called the French cancan.
  • The Champs-Élysées is probably the most famous street in Paris, and one of the most famous in the world. It is full of places to shop and eat. On one end of the Champs-Élysées is the Arc de Triomphe.
  • The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris' is a beautiful gothic cathedral, dating from the XIIth century.
  • The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur is the church that means "the heart of purity in Montmartre.
